Dubai’s Underground Revolution: Elon Musk’s Boring Company to Transform City’s Transit with High-Speed Loop

The MoU for Dubai Loop was signed at the WGS 2025.

Dubai aims to revolutionize its urban transportation landscape with an underground transport system — The Dubai Loop. A joint venture between Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority and Elon Musk’s The Boring Company, the Loop promises to redefine urban mobility in the emirate.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the World Governments Summit 2025. The Loop aims to create a network of underground tunnels that will whisk passengers across the city at unprecedented speeds. In a virtual session, Elon Musk and Omar Al Olama, the UAE’s Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, inked the deal in a virtual session.

The initial phase of the Dubai Loop will feature a 17-kilometer tunnel with 11 strategically placed stations designed to connect major hubs throughout the city.

Salient Features of Dubai Loop

  • The initial phase will enable 20,000 passengers to travel per hour; the aim is to expand passenger capacity to 100,000 passengers per hour.
  • The Dubai Loop will utilize electric vehicles, likely based on Tesla models, capable of reaching top speeds of up to 160 km/h (i.e., approximately 100 mph). These EVs will operate within the underground tunnels engineered by The Boring Company.
  • The system’s design ensures that it is immune to weather disruptions like Dubai’s intense heat or sandstorms, making it a reliable mode of transportation year-round.

Elon Musk, speaking via video link at the World Governments Summit, described the project as akin to traveling through a “wormhole,” emphasizing the system’s ability to transport people quickly and efficiently between two points without the usual traffic delays.

Benefits of Dubai Loop

The Dubai Loop offers several significant benefits compared to alternative transportation solutions, such as —

  • It offers weather-resistant operations during sandstorms & adverse conditions
  • Minimum noise pollution compared to aerial transportation
  • Better safety features, including earthquake resistance
  • Decreased surface-level traffic congestion
  • Stop-free travel between stations will ensure significantly reduced journey times across the city
  • A safer alternative to aerial transportation (like flying taxis and helicopters) as there is the elimination of crash risks and weather limitations

The Dubai Loop is not merely a transportation project; it is all set to transform how people commute within the city. Integrating the system with existing public transport systems, boasting impressive passenger capacity, and promoting sustainable travel and high-speed capabilities, the Loop aligns with Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050.
