Dubai’s RTA awards $217mn contract for Al Qudra Street Development Project

The new project by RTA will ensure reduced waiting times at major intersections.

Dubai’s RTA (i.e., Roads and Transport Authority) has awarded $217 million (AED 798 million) for a project that will optimize traffic flow, enhance mobility for residents and tourists, and enable urban development.

The project’s salient features include the following —

  • The project will extend Al Qudra Street’s intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, continue through Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, and terminate at Emirates Road.
  • It incorporates developing several interchanges, building bridges totaling 2,700 meters, and expanding the existing street by 11.6 km.
  • The street’s capacity will be enhanced, reducing travel time from 9.4 minutes to 2.8 minutes.
  • Around 400,000 residents and visitors in residential and development areas will benefit.

The Al Qudra Street Development Project aims to improve the vertical (East-West) road network. Key development areas that will be benefitted include —

  • Arabian Ranches 1 and 2
  • Dubai Motor City
  • Dubai Studio City
  • Akoya
  • Mudon
  • DAMAC Hills
  • The Sustainable City

Significant objectives of the project include —

  • Improve road capacity and optimize traffic flow at key strategic intersections
  • Alleviate congestion and decrease travel times between different areas
  • Facilitate seamless traffic movement on Al Qudra Street towards Emirates Road by offering direct connectivity to Al Qudra City and vice versa
  • Enhance road safety standards
  • Support urban growth
  • Stimulate economic activity in the surrounding areas
  • Improve traffic flow at the intersection of Al Qudra Street with the connecting road between Arabian Ranches and Dubai Studio City via a 600-meter bridge on Al Qudra Street, with 4 lanes in each direction; this will enhance the street’s capacity from 6,600 vehicles/hour to 19,200 vehicles/hour
  • Lessen waiting time at the intersection from 113 seconds to 52 seconds
  • upgrading the intersection of Al Qudra Street with Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street by building a 700-meter bridge with 7 lanes in both directions and auxiliary lanes for side ramps with 2 lanes each
  • A 500-meter bridge will be constructed to facilitate traffic flow from Al Qudra Street to Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street towards Jebel Ali
  • A 900-metre bridge will be constructed to ease traffic congestion for vehicles heading from Al Qudra Street to Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street towards Downtown Dubai and Dubai International Airport
  • Service roads will be built on both sides of Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, covering 3 kilometers, for better connectivity with surrounding development projects; it will also increase the street’s capacity from 7,800 vehicles/hour to 19,400 vehicles/hour and decrease the waiting time at the second intersection from 393 seconds to 60 seconds

The project aims to extend Al Qudra Street from the intersection with Emirates Road to the roundabout. It will serve key development areas like —

  • Town Square
  • Mira
  • DAMAC Hills 2

Lanes will be expanded in both directions along 3.4 kilometers of Al Qudra Street (from the Emirates Road intersection to the existing roundabout in the developers’ area). A new road extending 4.8 kilometers in the southern part of the developers’ area will connect with Emirates Road. The lanes will be expanded on both sides of Emirates Road, spanning a 4.8-kilometer stretch.
